HSE University Launches Development of Domestic 6G Communication Technologies Based on Sub-Terahertz Microelectronics

HSE University has launched a large-scale research and engineering initiative to develop domestic technologies for next-generation 6G communication systems. The project is being carried out by the team of the Strategic Technological Project 'Trusted 6G Communication Systems Technology Suite' implemented under the Priority 2030 programme.

One of the project’s key priorities is to develop the sub-terahertz frequency range above 100 GHz, which is considered essential for building next-generation high-speed wireless networks. In the past, this spectrum was rarely used in practical communication systems due to technological limitations. Today, however, it is becoming critically important for 6G development, offering ultra-high bandwidth and minimal signal delays.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) predicts that point-to-point implementation of sixth-generation wireless sub-terahertz technologies will begin worldwide in the coming years. In this context, developing a domestic scientific and technological base is becoming a key strategic priority, and HSE University aims to make a significant contribution to this field.

The research focuses on several cutting-edge areas. The first involves developing elements of an intelligent radio environment that can adapt to surrounding conditions and control signal propagation characteristics. The second focuses on creating wireless transceiver modules that support spectrally efficient modulation schemes and electronic beam scanning. The third area is the design of analogue neuromorphic computing circuits capable of local signal processing at high speed and with low power consumption.

The work is being carried out through close collaboration between the university’s scientists and engineers, bringing together expertise in physics, radio engineering, microelectronics, and neurotechnology. Successful implementation of these tasks will not only lay the foundation for developing domestic 6G systems but also ensure Russia's technological sovereignty in one of the most promising fields of modern science and technology.

'We are laying the foundation for Russia's sovereign telecommunications infrastructure. This is not only a scientific challenge but also a matter of national security and technological independence.'

The Strategic Technological Project 'Trusted 6G Communication Systems Technology Suite' is implemented as part of HSE University's Development Programme for 2025–2036, which won the Priority 2030 strategic academic leadership competition within the framework of the National Project 'Youth and Children.'

Scientists at HSE University have identified a molecular mechanism underlying aggressive breast cancer. They found that the signals supporting tumour growth originate not from the tumour itself but from its microenvironment. The researchers also demonstrated that reduced levels of the IGFBP6 protein in the tumour microenvironment lead to the accumulation of macrophages—immune cells associated with a higher risk of cancer recurrence. The Moscow Department of Information Technology and HSE University have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of innovative development of the capital’s IT infrastructure. The parties agreed on joint research into modern and promising communication technologies, including 5G and 6G, as well as AI, the Internet of Things, and other smart city technologies.

HSE University Presents Research Results at AI Conference in Oman

In April 2026, the International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence Applications (ISAA 2026) was held at the University of Nizwa in the Sultanate of Oman. The event was co-organised by HSE University, the University of Nizwa, and the University of Technology and Applied Sciences–Ibri. HSE’s CardioLife Test Among Winners of Data Fusion Awards 2026

The CardioLife genetic test—a development by the Centre for Biomedical Research and Technologies of the AI and Digital Science Institute at HSE University’s Faculty of Computer Science—has won the All-Russian cross-industry Data Fusion Awards, which recognise achievements in data and AI technologies. The project took first place in the Science–Business Partnership category, demonstrating a successful model for transferring technology from university research into the real healthcare sector.

HSE University Installs Geoscan Station at IIT Bombay

A Russian ground station for receiving SONIKS satellite data has been installed on the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). Developed by Geoscan, the system will become part of a mirror laboratory project run jointly by HSE University and one of India’s leading universities.

HSE MIEM and MTS Launch Workshop on Innovative Solutions in Communication Networks

The HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM) and MTS are launching a joint workshop in which students will work at the intersection of communications network engineering, data analysis, and digital technologies. The project is designed as a practice-oriented learning format, enabling students to tackle real industry challenges alongside company engineers and MIEM specialists. Registration to participate in the workshop is open until April 15, 2026.

HSE Unveils Anthropomorphic Courier Robot

From April 1 to 3, 2026, the Fourth Robotics Festival took place, with the HSE Faculty of Computer Science acting as the main organiser. The event featured the presentation of the anthropomorphic courier robot Arkus. The humanoid was introduced by the Institute for Robotic Systems, established jointly by HSE University and the EFKO Group of Companies.

How the Brain Processes a Word: HSE Researchers Compare Reading Routes in Adults and Children

Researchers from the HSE Center for Language and Brain used magnetoencephalography to study how the brains of adults and children respond to words during reading. They showed that in children the brain takes longer to process words that are frequently used in everyday speech, while rare words and pseudowords are processed in the same way—slowly and in parts. With age, the system is reorganised: high-frequency words shift to a fast route, whereas new letter combinations are still analysed slowly. The study was published in the journal Psychophysiology.

How Neural Networks Detect and Interpret Wordplay: New Insights from HSE Researchers

An international team including researchers from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science has presented KoWit-24, an annotated dataset of 2,700 Russian-language Kommersant news headlines containing wordplay. The dataset enables an assessment of how artificial intelligence detects and interprets wordplay. Experiments with five large language models show that even advanced systems still make mistakes, and that interpreting wordplay is more challenging for them than detecting it. The results were presented at the RANLP conference; the paper is available on Arxiv.org, and the dataset and the code for reproducing the experiments are available on GitHub.

HSE Researchers Experimentally Demonstrate Positive Effects of Urban Parks on the Brain

Scientists at HSE University have investigated the effect of parks on the cognitive and emotional resources of city dwellers. The researchers compared brain electrical activity in 30 participants while they watched videos of walks through parks and along busy highways. The results showed that green urban environments with trees produce a consistent effect across individuals, helping the brain calm down and relax. By contrast, walks along busy streets were found to be distracting. The findings have been published in Scientific Reports.
