Career Guidance in IT

HSE students from the Faculty of Computer Science and the Institute of Education have taken part in the ‘Put Together Your 2035 University’ hackaton. The theme of the hackaton was concerned with developing and designing AI solutions (with the use of machine learning) in education. HSE students took third place and made it through to the finals!

Career Guidance in IT

The hackaton took place in the beginning of November in six cities simultaneously (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Vladivostok, Tomsk, Ulyanovsk, and Makhachkala). Its task was to develop services, applications, modules and platforms for a university of the future called ‘National Technology Initiative University 20.35’. The event in Moscow attracted ten teams consisting of people with various backgrounds interested in data science and education. The EduAdvisor team included two students from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (Semyon Obukhov and Andrey Isaev), two students from the master’s programme ‘Measurement in Psychology and Education’ (Roman Solopov and Leonid Sherstuk),and one self-employed professional, Maxim Popilin.

The team presented a project aiming to solve the problems of IT career guidance for schoolchildren. They created a 3D classification, with one of the dimensions being a Klimov differential diagnostic questionnaire (commonly used for career guidance in Russia), the second dimension determining types of activities as project-based or process-based, and the third one determining product creation or product development/maintenance. As a result, the team got a 20-cell matrix, each of which indicated the most relevant IT occupation. They created a Telegram bot to carry out the interview according to the Kilmov questionnaire. The grades for the other two scales are determined via machine learning technology that analyzes profiles on the VKontakte social network.

Our product works as follows: someone finds our Telegram bot, takes a test there, provides a link to their VKontakte profile, and gets a suggestion of an IT profession which would be the most interesting for them. If our project is successful in the finals, we are planning to turn it into a web app and a mobile app, which will not only suggest professions, but build individual study tracks to help the user become a professional in the selected area

Roman Solopov

The prize for the team was a free course on Netology. The project that wins in the finals will receive funding for their project.

‘The Goal of the Spring into ML School Is to Unite Young Scientists Engaged in Mathematics of AI’

The AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Innopolis University organised a week-long programme for students, doctoral students, and young scientists on the application of mathematics in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Fifty participants of Spring into ML attended 24 lectures on machine learning, took part in specific pitch sessions, and completed two mini-courses on diffusion models—a developing area of AI for data generation.

Software for Rapid Detection of Dyslexia Developed in Russia

HSE scientists have developed a software tool for assessing the presence and degree of dyslexia in school students based on their gender, age, school grade, and eye-tracking data. The application is expected to be introduced into clinical practice in 2024. The underlying studies were conducted by specialists in machine learning and neurolinguistics at the HSE AI Research Centre.

HSE University to Host ‘Fall into ML 2023’ Machine Learning Conference

Machine Learning (ML) is a field of AI that examines methods and algorithms that enable computers to learn based on experience and data and without explicit programming. With its help, AI can analyse data, recall information, build forecasts, and give recommendations. Machine learning algorithms have applications in medicine, stock trading, robotics, drone control and other fields.
