HSE Design Lab Receives Diploma from Union of Moscow Architects
The HSE Design Lab was named one of the winners in the Best Interior Solution project category of the Union of Moscow Architects for its project to renovate the interiors of the HSE University building on Maly Tryokhsvyatitelsky Pereulok. The awards were presented at the BUILD SCHOOL exhibition in Moscow, which ended on November 2.
The HSE Art and Design School created a project for the renovation of the HSE University building on Maly Tryokhsvyatitelsky Pereulok. The building, which houses the HSE School of Communication, closed for renovations in 2022 and reopened in a renewed form in the spring of 2023.
Project creators: Natalya Logutova, Ksenia Kasamara, Vyacheslav Moskovkin, Natalya Nemova, Yulia Sheremetova, Roman Shestkov, and Sofya Paymanova.
The team devised and planned public spaces for students’ and teachers’ joint work, recreation areas, and coffee points. All classrooms and faculty co-working spaces in the new building are equipped with plasma displays, the walls in the halls on the first and third floors are coated with a surface for markers, and there is a chalk wall in the coffee area on the first floor. The designers also worked with colour: warm white was chosen as the base colour for the walls throughout the building, with dark grey partitions in the halls and recreation areas.
Deputy Head of the HSE Art and Design School
‘Year after year, accepting awards as part of the BUILD SCHOOL PROJECT, we increasingly realise that receiving recognition not for private projects, but for ones like the renovation of the building on Maly Tryokhsvyatitelsky Pereulok is the most enjoyable part of our work. Dealing with dozens of formal restrictions, designing an educational environment, attempting to bring innovative solutions within strict rules—not every bureau is able to withstand this and bring a project to implementation. We can, and we will be able to do it over and over again.’
BUILD SCHOOL is the only exhibition in Russia that comprehensively covers all aspects of the design, construction, and outfitting of schools and kindergartens. The HSE Art and Design School and the Design Lab have been successfully participating in and winning BUILD SCHOOL since 2017. This year’s theme was ‘The Educational Environment of the Future.’
The HSE Art and Design School and the ‘Environment of the Future. Architectural Bureau’ laboratory develop modern educational spaces that give rise to new educational concepts and methods. The BUILD SCHOOL exhibition showcased how the educational environment can be transformed using an individual, comprehensive approach.
Natalya Nemova, curator of a one-year course in Interior Design, HSE Art and Design School:
‘We started working on the design of the building’s premises back in 2019. Several iterations were thought out and developed—a major renovation project involving the dismantling of some partitions and the redevelopment of offices and classrooms. We later proposed a simplified renovation scheme with options for painting rooms and recreation areas, and thought through local ways to “refresh” the interiors. This option was chosen ultimately.’
Ksenia Kasamara, Head of the HSE INTERIOR LAB:
‘In this project, we thought through the public spaces that could be transformed for different formats of events, designed an open co-working space and coffee points, optimised workspaces for employees, students, and teachers, and reconstructed all the bathrooms and staircases. Floor-by-floor colour coding was also a crucial part of the work.’
Teachers and students from the School of Communication also shared their impressions of the renovated building interior.
Maria Mordvinova, First Deputy Head of the HSE University School of Communication:
’Our School of Communication building is an comfortable learning environment where students and teachers work side by side. Our fruitful cooperation with the HSE Art and Design School has yielded excellent results.’
Viktoria Matvienko, Director of the Student and Alumni Centre at the HSE University School of Communication:
‘The renovated School of Communication building allows us to make the extracurricular life of our students bright and memorable. We hold events of various formats: quizzes, exhibitions, meetings for volunteers and active students, open days, a ping-pong festival, and many other activities. Soon, our building will host HSE Donor Day for the first time. It’s great that the building has turned out to be cozy, functional, and creative. This is a space in which it is pleasant to study, work, and implement something new.’
School of Communication Student Reviews
‘After classes, it’s very convenient to stay in the building to relax a little and go about your business. Everything you could possibly need is here. My classmates and I often gather on the second floor in the evenings and work on team projects.’
‘The building space is so functional that we not only study here, but also relax, play Jenga and table football, and hold events for the entire School of Communications.’
‘The design is very beautiful, from the bright and airy classrooms to the walls where we can let our creativity out in the form of drawings and messages.’
‘When you come to the building, you feel that everything has been done with care for those who are here, and you want to come not only for classes but also to feel like part of this community. The open co-working spaces are especially conducive to communication.’
